And When the Time Had Fully Come

This hymn explores Galatians 4:4-5: But when the set time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those under the law, that we might receive adoption to sonship. Here the apostle Paul sets forth the all-important doctrine of the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ, an incarnation necessary for our salvation.

Only by becoming fully human could our Savior live under the law and fulfill that law in our place. Only by becoming fully human could he subject himself to death and die in our place.

Therefore, when the appropriate time had come, the Father sent his Son to our world, and the angel Gabriel announced the news first to the young virgin who would be, miraculously, his mother.

We’re not surprised that Mary's first impulses were fear and confusion. Who was this awe-inspiring being who appeared out of thin air, and how could his words possibly be true? But she believed. She yielded to the mystery and sang her Magnificat: "My soul magnifies the Lord."

Then the hymn further explores the juxtapositions of Jesus' birth: He is the Son of God, yet he has a mother, a virgin mother, who must protect him from the elements. He is the Son of God, yet his earthly—and earthy—coming is to a cow barn. He is the Son of God, heralded by angels, but the news is not given to spiritual leaders but to low-skill laborers.

By becoming a child of humanity, the Son of God makes us children of God, adoptees into God's family where we all share the blessings of sonship.

And when he comes again, this Son of God, no one will miss or mistake his arrival. He will come as the King he is, powerful and majestic, and he will take us, his sons and daughters, home with him forever.
